A Little About Us...

Welcome to the Shindokan Budo New England blogsite. Shindokan Budo New England is a traditional budo dojo located in the southeastern Connecticut/southwestern Rhode Island area. Shindokan Budo New England, is dedicated to the study and preservation of the traditional martial culture of Japan and Okinawa. We practice and offer instruction in classical Japanese martial traditions, including authentic jujutsu and koryu sword arts, making our dojo unique among all others here in southern New England. Shindokan Budo Dojo is a member of the Kokusai Nippon Budo Kai , the caretaker of the invaluable cultural and martial traditions that we follow. We are proud and honoured to be member of the KNBK the ryuha which they house.

In addition to their historic function as highly efficacious combative arts, authentic Japanese martial traditions also simultaneously stand as profound vehicles of self realisation. As such, the study of classical and traditional martial arts and ways can have equally profound impacts in the way we live our lives. Through the practise of these arts, we strive to cultivate the way of the true warrior heart: to lead a victorious life in which we actualise fearlessness, respect, dignity, wisdom and compassion. These attributes can provide one with the power and determination to face the challenges that invariably arise in life. Through the relentless practice of budo, we can actualise these wholesome qualities in each moment of our daily lives, for they are inherently present within the depths of our lives. they are our deepest reality. Budo is the vehicle through which we can cut through the delusions, the haze, which prevents us from seeing ourselves clearly and realising the highest potential that is truly our deepest reality.

Erik A. Johnstone is the Dojo-cho/Chief Instructor of Shindokan Budo New England. Carl E. Long, Kyoshi, 22nd Soshihan of Seito Muso Jikiden Eishin-ryu Iai-Heiho and Chairman of the Kokusai Nippon Budo Kai. Johnstone Sensei holds the following grades and titles:

7th Dan - Kaiden Shihan, Nihon Aiki Jujutsu

5th Dan - Doushi, Shihan-Dai, Muso Jikiden Eishin-ryu Iaijutsu

4thDan, Dai Nippon Batto-ho Iaido

4th Dan - Shihan, Goju-ryu Karate-do

1st Dan, Wado-ryu Karate-do/Wado-ryu Jujutsu Kempo
