Welcome to the Shindokan Dojo / Black Bear Traditional Martial Arts Center blogsite. Shindokan / Black Bear Dojo is a traditional dojo serving eastern Connecticut and southern Rhode Island, Shindokan / Black Bear Dojo is a cooperative effort dedicated to the study and preservation of the traditional martial culture of Japan and Okinawa. Offering instruction in classical Japanese martial traditions, including authentic jujutsu and koryu sword arts, our dojo unique among all others here in southern New England.
Shindokan Dojo also is also home to an authorized Zen practice group. Beginning in June, 2010, we will meet weekly on Saturday mornings for Zen meditation (zazen). Zen is a vehicle to awaken to reality as it really is; to realize a life of mindfulness, wisdom and compassion. Zen has had a long and profound influence on the warrior arts and culture of Japan. As Budo and Zen both teach the reality of impermanence and emphasize living life in this very momement, Zen was highly valued by the warrior class. All are welcome to join us for authentic Zen practice.
We also offer training in Reihokan Shorin-ryu Karate & Kobudo, providing traditional instruction that is unparalleled by any other dojo in or region.
